Indigenous ex-player becomes an AFLFA Patron.

AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”

The AFL Fans Association is thrilled to announce that former AFL player Che Cockatoo-Collins has joined as a Patron, alongside esteemed Patrons Susan Alberti AC and Jason Ball.

Che first made his mark as a talented 19-year-old debuting in 1994 with Essendon and later showcased his prowess at Port Adelaide, playing 85 games for Essendon and 75 games for Port Adelaide.

His contributions to the sport were recognised in September 2023 when he was inducted into the Queensland Football Hall of Fame. Che was the first Indigenous player from Queensland to play at the AFL level.

Along with Michael Long, Michael McLean and Gilbert McAdam, Che assisted in establishing the anti-discrimination rule known as the Peek Rule. This rule honours the work of the late Tony Peek, a long-term administrator who worked closely with the League's Indigenous players to understand the impact of vilification in the sport and develop a rule to combat it.

Beyond his football career, Che serves as the Executive Manager of Indigenous Affairs at NBN Co. As a proud Indigenous Australian, he carries an innate passion for his community and heritage.

“I’m delighted to work with the AFLFA to amplify the voices of the Indigenous community,” says Che. “AFL should be a sport where everyone feels safe and excited to enjoy our great game.”

Ron Issko, President of the AFL Fans Association said, “Che is the perfect fit for the AFLFA, bringing his experience as an ex AFL footballer, a passionate fan and an indigenous advocate.”

Ron adds, “Any form of racism is unacceptable in sport and society. We’ve made progress, but there’s still more to do. Che’s AFLFA appointment will extend to advise on indigenous issues in Australian Football and will undoubtedly foster inclusivity.”

The 2024 Fan Survey underscored the need for continued efforts to eliminate racism in football. Che emphasized, saying “Zero tolerance for unacceptable behaviour is a given. Inclusiveness is our goal, and I look forward to collaborating with AFLFA to achieve this vision.”

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Che Cockatoo-Collins as a Patron of the AFL Fans Association.
