AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”
The AFL’s most passionate supporters have been celebrated in the 2024 AFL Fans Association Awards, marking the 10th year of these honours.
The winners are:
• Fan of the Year: "Swoop" Luke – Collingwood Football Club
• Supporter Group of the Year: The WA Sydney Swans Supporters Club
AFL Fans Association President Ron Issko praised the recipients, saying, "Both winners are extremely deserving and exemplify the dedication of AFL fans all over Australia. The quality of nominations was extraordinary, showing just how many wonderful fans we have."
"This year’s winners are truly incredible," Ron added. "Swoop’s passion and dedication is inspiring, and the WA Sydney Swans Supporters Club are very worthy winners."
Fan of the Year: "Swoop" Luke Swoop
Luke is a devoted and active Collingwood supporter who goes above and beyond to connect with the fan community.
Through his social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X, he keeps fans up-to-date with Collingwood news and AFL insights. He’s conducted interviews with Collingwood stars like Tom Mitchell and Scott Pendlebury and has hosted events featuring club legends such as Peter Daicos.
One of his standout contributions is his post-game segment, “Swooping Around,” where he interviews fans outside the stadium after every Collingwood match, win or lose. He also organised an ice bucket fundraiser during the Big Freeze match, raising money for the MND Foundation.
What sets Swoop apart is his dedication – he spends countless hours creating content, editing videos, and engaging with the Collingwood fanbase, all self-funded and with no official connection to the club. His platform is a welcoming space for Pies supporters to connect, and his genuine love for the team shines through in everything he does.
Swoop’s commitment, respect for others, and tireless work for the fan community make him a worthy winner of Fan of the Year. He’s truly an outstanding ambassador for Collingwood fans everywhere. A very excited Swoop said, "I am completely humbled to receive this award. I wouldn’t be here without the unwavering support of the Collingwood community and my family. This is not only an award for me, but an award for what we’ve built together."
Supporter Group of the Year: The WA Sydney Swans Supporters Club
The WA Sydney Swans Supporters Club, led by President Daz Sommerville, is a prime example of what a dedicated supporters group can achieve. Known for their inclusivity and strong sense of community, they are the beating heart of the Sydney Swans supporter base in WA.
Members gather at ‘The Empire Bar’ to watch away games, and these events are where the club’s spirit truly shines. They host raffles, with proceeds donated to the Sydney Swans Foundation, further demonstrating their commitment. When the Swans play in WA, senior club figures like Tom Harley and past players attend the Supporters Club events to share updates with fans.
Beyond match days, the Supporters Club offers plenty of opportunities for fans to connect. From weekends away and ladies’ lunches to group trips to the SCG, they ensure Sydney Swans supporters in WA can enjoy a sense of community. The Club has also contributed between $10,000 to $15,000 to the Sydney Swans Foundation over the years, showcasing their dedication to the team’s success on and off the field.
A major highlight for the Club came in August 2023, when around 100 members visited the Sydney Swans Headquarters for a behind-the-scenes tour, including a special on-ground experience during a game. The WA Sydney Swans Supporters Club also holds regular raffles featuring signed jerseys, footballs, and limited edition signed player caricatures available only to members, creating further excitement among members.
In addition to the main group, the Swanettes – the ladies’ group – host lunches with guest speakers, adding another layer to the Club’s strong community atmosphere. The Club's commitment, enthusiasm, and family-like warmth make them a valued part of the Sydney Swans family.
President Daz Sommerville, still in shock at winning the award, said, "the award is a great acknowledgement to our members for their commitment to a football club they love so much. It just goes to show that distance does not diminish passion. It is truly an honour to be able to accept this award on their behalf."
